Kojima Productions has released a gameplay trailer for Metal Gear Online, the multiplayer component of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and it has managed to stir up a ruckus.

The gameplay looks great and it shows that the third-person shooter doesn't have to lose its stealthy edge on account of multiplayer, and that it can function just fine when several people are involved aside from the big man himself.

The footage confirms that multiplayer will be an important component of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, a separate game mode that blends classic multiplayer action with some of the elements of the main game, including portions of the title's single-player campaign.

The footage was premiered in a four-minute trailer unveiled by publisher Konami at The Game Awards show held in Las Vegas this past weekend, offering a first look at how the highly anticipated stealth-based third-person shooter works with several people on board.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the biggest and most ambitious entry in the series yet, focusing on the legendary hero Snake, and picking things up where the recently released prologue, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, left them.

A massive undertaking

The multiplayer component of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Metal Gear Online, focuses on Tactical Team Operations and takes advantage of the unique class system that defines key strengths and abilities that players can make use of on the battlefield.

Metal Gear Online will also feature appearances from some of the most well-known characters in the series, including Venom Snake and Ocelot.

The game has an open-world structure, enabling players to tackle its challenges however they see fit. In addition to this, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain also features changing weather conditions and day and night cycles, and lighting changes throughout the day will play an important role in stealth strategies.

In addition to this, gamers will be able to use various modes of transportation and infiltration techniques, which the short but satisfying Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes proved are highly satisfying.

The title is powered by the all-new FOX Engine, and it features the highest fidelity graphics in the franchise's history. In addition to this, it's also coming to Steam, so PC gamers can rejoice at the chance to experience the best installment in the series on their platform of choice.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is expected out sometime in 2015, headed for PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
