MetaTools has released MetaSquares, the company's first iPhone title. MetaSquares is touted as "deceptively simple to play, but hard to be expert strategy game". The game is available for download via the iTunes App Store.

MetaTools is a developer and publisher of mobile and social gaming applications. The company contracted puzzle and computer game designer Scott Kim to craft out the puzzles inside MetaSquares. Kim's puzzles were featured in "Scientific American" magazine. He created the initial concept for MetaSquares during the mid 1990s, an official report reveals.

From the iTunes App Store we have some excerpts from the official description of MetaSquares, which go...

It's Hip To Be Square

Match wits with the computer in a battle to capture the most squares on the board. Take turns placing pieces on the board while trying to get all 4 corners of a square. Squares can be formed at any angle and are worth more points the bigger they are. [...] MetaSquares is ideally suited for the on-the-go iPhone player taking advantage of the touch screen capabilities of your device. [...] Download MetaSquares today and spend hours with the fun yet challenging board puzzler!

As a player, you enter an eight by eight board in which you must create more squares than your opponents. Controls include tapping the screen, or using gestures, such as "swipe", which are imperative as the levels become progressively more difficult. Games are usually two to three minutes long, so it's the perfect game for killing time while waiting for the bus, or in a ticket line.

"We are thrilled to introduce MetaSquares to the millions of iPhone owners who will look to Apple’s mobile platform for entertainment as well as communication," said Wilczak. "MetaSquares signals our re-entry into this market and will allow our dedicated fans, who found our original products innovative and rewarding, as well as new players the opportunity to play anytime and anywhere, solo or with a friend."

MetaSquares costs $2.99 and is available on the App Store here. The game requires an iPhone or iPod touch with firmware 2.0 (or later) installed.
