Here we are having a first look at the new Men of War: Assault Squad Beta, which has just been released by Digitalmindsoft. Although they are still in the process of tweaking the game here and there, the online multiplayer mode seems to be more than operational as you will see from our own gameplay footage.

With a new addition to the game, the Skirmish mode can also be tried out, although it's not nearly as much fun as the online experience.

Sure, it comes with new maps and wave after wave of enemies with armored vehicles and adrenaline-pumped soldiers that just can't wait to take you out, but it feels like something is missing.

The online mode is quick to pick off on what Skirmish mode seems to miss, and that is the thrill of not being able to anticipate your enemies’ next move. Whether you're being assaulted by infantry or heavy vehicles, the odds never seem to favor the n00bs.

I say this mostly because you need to have a firm grasp on each unit’s abilities and weaknesses. Just like in real life, you can't expect a single soldier to take on an armored tank and live to brag about it.

Not only that it's ridiculous, but we'd be throwing realism out the window and no hard core strategy gamer would settle for less than a life-like experience.

What's great about Assault Squad is that you can now upgrade your units and veterancy is not to be taken lightly. The more units your soldiers take out, the more skilled they get and the faster they heal.

I've noticed this when I used a newly created unit with a rocket launcher and wanted to target a tank. Well, it took about five or six rockets to actually get the job done and he also brought down two nearby houses that were oh so threatening.

Not only that buying units is more tactical than ever (reminds me of Company of Heroes), but also there's a nice touch of realism when it comes to recreating the World War II battleground experience.

Even graphics have been decently polished and when you're fighting on a rainy day with lighting and thunder, you actually get a good vibe of nature gone wild meets warfare.

As expected, anything and everything can be taken apart. From tearing down rooftops from nearby buildings (remember my n00b AT infantry guy?) to stomping trees and fences with your armored vehicles.
