Though it usually seems content with stealth, Memorex has broken the silence just recently in order to unleash a portable hard disk drive of its own, the so-called Mirror for Photos, with an USB connection and capacity of up to 640 GB.

Storage units come in all shapes and sizes, but in the case of external hard drives, design elements and convenience features are, in truth, the main, if not only, major factors in determining their appeal.

Granted, some drives stand out through higher speeds, as a result of featuring an USB 3.0 connection, while others simply excel in terms of total capacity.

Nevertheless, in the end, hardware makers end up putting a special emphasis on aesthetics and functionality than raw performance.

The newcomer bears the more or less suggestive name of Mirror for Photos and is meant to easily back up end-users photo and other picture collections.

Basically, when connected to the USB port, the portable hard disk's pre-installed backup software automatically scans and copies any photos it can locate.

This automatic backup can be done on both PCs and Mac systems and will definitely help in preventing the unwilling loss of virtually-stored photos and albums.

"As people's digital libraries continue to grow, they understand how critical it is to preserve those moments, yet are often intimidated with the notion of backing up," said Jess Walton, Memorex brand manager.

"Mirror for Photos provides even non tech-savvy users with a quick, simple and maintenance-free method for backing up and protecting precious memories," Walton added.

The newcomer measures 152 (W) x 51 (D) x 229 (H) mm and does not need more power than what is provided by the USB port.

Available in 320 GB, 500 GB and 640 GB, the Mirror for Photos from Memorex sells for $79.99, $99.99 and $119.99, respectively.
