Santa Claus might be a fictional character but there is no doubt that he can be only white, at least according to Fox News newswoman Megyn Kelly. Above is a segment from her show The Kelly File, which has already gone viral.

This being Fox News we’re talking about, it’s already generated heated debate online, especially if you consider the efforts of various groups to make the winter holidays more inclusive.

However, as far as Kelly is concerned, diversity be damned because you simply can’t re-write / re-create a fictional character.

The argument that Kelly is trying to make is that a Slate African-American journalist is completely in the wrong saying that, in order to promote diversity, Santa should be black or, at the very least, a penguin, because that way, African-American kids would feel better growing up.

The journalist recalls her childhood and how hard it was to relate to a white Santa, so she suggests a penguin as second choice if he can’t be black; after all, all children love animals of all kinds and, if Santa was a cutesy penguin, they would no longer be faced with the question of race.

Kelly obviously doesn’t agree because Santa is what he is, which is white.

“For all you kids watching at home, Santa just is white. Santa is what he is.... I wanted to get that straight,” Kelly says. Just like Jesus, Santa is white and you can’t make him any other race, she says later in the show.

“Just because [an image] makes you feel uncomfortable doesn't mean it has to change. I mean, Jesus was a white man too. He was a historical figure – that's a verifiable fact. As is Santa. I just want the kids watching to know that,” she explains.
