Video games publisher Capcom has announced that it has terminated the development process for Mega Man Universe, a game that was initially set to be launched on the Xbox Live Arcade service and on the PlayStation Network.

When Mega Man Universe was announced the launch date was given as spring 2011 and since then Capcom has only offered limited amounts of information on the game and did not talk about a delay in its launch.

The idea with Mega Man Universe was to create not just a classic platforming title using the well known intellectual property but to give players the tools they would need to create their own content and then share it with others.

The game was set to include a level editor that was very close to the tools the developers themselves used and the infrastructure to allow players to share, evaluate and vote the levels the community creates.

At first the Mega Man Universe project was lead by Keihi Inafune, one of the original creators of the series.

In 2010 he chose to leave Capcom and create his own games development studio, called Comcept.

It's not clear whether the cancellation of Mega Man Universe is linked to his departure as Capcom, in the official announcement, only talked about “various circumstances” that have affected the project.

Mega Man Universe seemed like an exciting concept for lovers of the Mega Man character and his various enemies, as it would allow them to play out and create almost all the scenarios that have so far been relegated to the realms of fan fiction.

It's not clear what other Mega Man powered projects Capcom has in development now that Universe has been terminated.

The end of March was affected by other cancellations, with Sony choosing to abandon work on The Agency and lay off staff.
