In the era of smartphones, smartwatches, smart rings, nothing should surprise us. Yet, this next little intelligent gadget we're going to talk about in what follows might be something that draws the attention of the bizarre gizmo hunter.

Introducing the Quitbit, an Internet-connected lighter that can light-up your cigarette, obviously.

But here comes the interesting part, the Quitbit is not actually here to feed your addiction, but to help you overcome it. If you want to, of course.

The Quitbit is currently on Kickstarter gathering funds to send it off into mass production, but before you make a pledge, we’re pretty sure you’d want to know a little more about how this works.

Quitbit borrows the monitoring principles embedded in fitness trackers in order to allow users to track their smoking levels. Basically, the concept is very akin to FitBit, but applied to smoking.

The new product is a new addition to the Kickstarter family and is seeking to gather up to $50,000 / €36,334.

The smart lighter taps into a heating coil system quite reminiscent of those found in auto vehicles. The lighter works by keeping accurate records of every single time you light up something.

So, regardless if you are looking to quit smoking or not, the data will be stored up in an accompanying app. However, it wouldn't make much sense to purchase such a lighter if you weren't even remotely considering renouncing your smoke inhalation routine.

The Quitbit will use sneaky ways to convince you that you are better off without the company of cigarettes. For example, it will show you how much money you've saved up, cutting back on your smoking. The lighter also displays the time when you last smoked and how many cigarettes you smoked during a certain period.

The Quitbit is the love-child of two friends who wanted to give up smoking and needed an easy and intuitive way of tracking the progress.

We know what you’re thinking. Aren't there a lot of apps out there designed to help avid smokers quit the game?

Of course there are, but this solution is the first one that involves any physical hardware. The Quitbit also eliminates the need for users to input smoking information within the app, as the lighter does that all on its own. This way you won’t find yourself cheating, either.

The Quitbit looks a little large for a lighter and might be mistaken for a mini smartphone, but given the fact its purpose is a pure one, the bulky factor might be overlooked.
