Outdoor lovers who just like to go camping or go on hiking expeditions away from civilization but still want to remain in touch with their family and friends back-home, should take a look at the Meet Earl tablet.

This solar-charged device boasts two-way radio (can be used in case of emergency) and is waterproof, so it can be used in places one wouldn't be able to take advantage of your normal smartphone or tablet.

Earl has been designed as an off-grid gadget with a glove-friendly e-ink touchscreen, mono-crystalline solar cells and a display that can withstand dust, mud, shock or being submersed in water or in low extreme temperatures.

The tablet is also equipped with highly functioning weather sensors (thermometer, hygrometer, barometer and anemometer) which are capable of providing a pretty decent weather forecast.

The tablet will prevent inexperienced hikers from getting lost by plotting the precise location, direction and elevation parameters.

And because the device runs on Android, users will also be able to have access to compatible apps, so you can play a game or two in your tent before you go to sleep.

Other specifications include 1GHz CPU with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage (which is expandable via microSD).

So far Early has been a crowdfunding project, but the first few units should arrive to pledgers around April. Pre-orders for Earl are still up and those interested can reserve their out-door companion for $299 / €219 a pop.

Earl offers a choice in color between Coal and Snow. On top of that, Earl comes pre-loaded with 100k resolution topo base maps of the United States, Canada and Mexico. For an extra $50 / 37, users can upgrade Earl with extra 24k resolution topo maps and microSD.

The tablet has made a public appearance ever since May but since then, the developing process has been advancing slowly and pledgers still have to wait a while before getting their hands on the Earl.
