If you've ever dreamed about owning an external HDD that will certainly stand out from the crowd, then you should know that this is exactly what the people from Convar have in store for you, with their new ByteSpotter line of external HDDs.

Without a doubt, these are among the most unusual storage products we've ever come across, one of the main reason being the fact that the reading/writing head is actually exposed (well, protected by a solid piece of translucent glass, but nevertheless visible).

However, that's just the start, since this thing also offers a couple of very interesting customization options, users being able to easily choose one of the thee available top covers (Snow White, Mohawk and Red Barron), as well as one of the three available bottom covers, two of which are made from some rare wood essences (Black Walnut, Cherry Tree), while a third from gray iron.

The only downside (well, at least in our opinion, anyway), is the fact that the name of each of the separate top covers is actually printed on the cover itself, which is just a tad tacky (although, who knows, maybe some people will actually be quite comfortable with it).

Additional customization options include the black or stainless steel grilles, as well as the threads, available in either Aluminium or Black versions.

Now, moving to the hard-drive contained within, we're talking about a 1TB unit (a 2TB version will also be available at some point in the near future) in 3.5-inch form factor and 7200 RPM, that also packs plenty of “classic” interfaces (namely basic SATA 300, eSATA and USB 2.0), with an USB 3.0 connector also being available as a separate option.

Pricing for one of these customized external HDDs from Convar has been set at around 348 Euro (or fairly $487 USD), which is not exactly a very small sum, but it's quite well worth it, given the really unique look and feel it provides.
