The chip will be a strong contender to the Snapdragon 810

Taiwanese chip maker MediaTek was the first to announce an octa-core mobile chip, something which attracted heavy criticism from rivals in the industry like Qualcomm who argued cores inside silicone need to get better, not increase in number.

Well, fast forward a few months into the future and Qualcomm is struggling to get its Snapdragon 810 out and about. The architecture has been said to be plagued by overheating issues which the US chip maker is doing its best to solve before the platform makes its way into a lot of premium handsets this year.

In the meantime, MediaTek continues to stay focused, so is prepping a reputable mobile behemoth chipset that will arrive in the wild as the MT6795.

Not all details regarding the chip are known yet, but for now we can tell you the MT6795 is going to be an octa-core affair clocked up to 2.2GHz. The cores are arranged in ARM’s big.LITTLE configuration, but MediaTek doesn't give us the specific details related to the cores, not yet anyway.

But unlike the standard big.LITTLE configuration, MediaTek uses a variation that uses all eight cores simultaneously.

However, if we were to take into account that this is a 64-bit processor, the MT6795 will probably flaunt ARM Cortex-A57 cores.

The MT6795's strong point is its slow-motion video capabilities

On top of that, the silicone bit is capable of some nifty tricks. For starters, it offers 2K support, 120MHz refresh rate and ClearMotion technology. We saved the best for last. Perhaps the MT6795 most impressive feat is slow-motion video support.

And MediaTek is putting this capability to the test, by presenting us with a video shot by a smartphone bundling an MT6795 chip on the inside.

When the platform makes it out and into phones, it will allow handsets to capture 1/16 speed video as you can witness for yourself in the video below.

The demonstration includes shooting in 1080p slow-motion with an impressive 480fps. Check out the results below.

The new MediaTek chip seems to be a close competitor to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810, and along with Samsung’s 14nm Exynos 7420 chip, mobile silicone battle will be getting pretty fierce this year.

Not to mention that yesterday word surfaced saying LG was also building its own high-end mobile platform, which luckily is not based on the NUCLUN architecture.
