They won't actually need a physical USB connection to do so though

The USB 3.0 SuperSpeed specification is already very fast, even reaching 20 Gbps. Or at least it will as soon as the work of the USB Implementers Forum gets put to use.

Meanwhile, a different work by the USB-IF has gained attention: the Media Agnostic (MA) USB specification.

Essentially, it allows USB communications for wireless devices and docking stations without actually needing a USB port.

The goal is to enable wireless Gigabit transfer rates using only existing USB infrastructure.

The WiGig Serial Extension (WSE) v1.2 specification from the Wi-Fi Alliance will be used as the foundation for the Media Agnostic USB specification, since it already integrates the USB protocol.

No clue how long it will take USB MA to be finalized. Hopefully, not too many months. Maybe we'll get lucky and see it at least previewed at CES 2014, in January.
