Publisher Electronic Arts has announced that its upcoming Medal of Honor first person shooter, set in the real world conflict of Afghanistan, has managed to set a new record for pre orders for the entire franchise, meaning that the launch of the first person shooter it likely to be a success.

Medal of Honor is being created by Danger Close, also known as EALA, who is working on the single player section of the title and by DICE, based in Stockholm, who are creating the all important multiplayer game modes.

The single player campaign will allow the gamer to experience the Afghanistan conflict from the point of view of Tier 1 Operators, some of the toughest and most secretive fighters in the United States military, with a few perspective shits that allows the developers to create an interesting narrative structure.

The multiplayer will be fast paced and more close quarters oriented than that of previous DICE title Battlefield 2: Bad Company and it felt pretty good when I got some hands on with its at Gamescom in Germany.

Medal of Honor has recently became a subject of controversy because of the fact that players can chose to play as the Taliban in multiplayer and shoot NATO and American troops, but a lot of video game developers jumped to defend it and point out that villains are a necessary element of any war.

The biggest competitor for Medal of Honror, which launched on October 12, will be Call of Duty: Black Ops, created by Treyarch and published by Activision Blizzard, which arrived in under one month, on November 9.

The executive producer of Medal of Honor has said that the game needs to sell at least 3 million copies in order to get a sequel while an analyst has stated that the launch date for the new first person shooter has been badly chosen, with players still recovering after purchasing Halo: Reach and Call of Duty coming too soon after.
