McAfee has announced that it will integrate some security solutions with Intel-powered laptops and mobile Internet devices. The only condition for the mobile gadgets to be secured by the McAfee technologies is to be based on the Z5XX Intel Atom processor and the open source Linux Moblin software.

In the case of portable computers, McAfee will also integrate a security encryption technology with those already offered by Intel - the anti-theft and active management technologies. All these aim at preventing any unauthorized access to data found on a lost or stolen laptop. The electronic device shuts down automatically after being lost or stolen, and its booting can be performed only by the rightful owner.

"McAfee provides enterprise-class, powerful encryption and strong access control technologies that seamlessly integrate with existing systems," says Gerhard Watzinger, senior vice president and general manager of McAfee's Data Protection Business Unit. "By teaming with Intel to provide encryption for laptops we are extending protection to customers anywhere anytime."

Mobile Internet devices also need protection from external threats, as they use the open Internet to offer users experiences similar to those for which computers are usually required. "In today's highly connected world, Intel takes mobile device security very seriously," says Pankaj Kedia, director of Global Ecosystem Programs in Intel Corporation's Ultra Mobility Group. "Intel's low power technologies, in combination with McAfee's experience in security solutions, should enable a more robust and secure solution for our customers."

Encryption and access limitation to devices that connect to the Internet are highly necessary in times like these, when data losses and breaches affect banks, state institutions, and personal information databases equally. "Data loss prevention solutions monitor, document, and prevent sensitive information from leaving an organization." explains McAfee, underscoring the need for enhanced protection to avoid what could easily turn into cyber catastrophes.
