More and more platters

The OneTouch II storage lineup has been highly spoken of, the hard drives getting only good reviews. The solutions have received awards for stability and speed, and the versions aimed at Mac systems or the ones including FireWire connectivity didn't go unnoticed either.

A few months ago, Maxtor representatives said that the drives with capacities of 500GB will be introduced by the end of the year, which is a significant upgrade compared to the 200 and 300 GB versions.

However, LaCie has driven Maxtor to take things a step further, the hard-disk producer announcing 600GB and 1TB capacities for its OneTouch III lineup. The solution will be compatible with the following standards: USB 2.0, FireWire 400/800 and RAID 0/1. To obtain these record capacities, Maxtor has resorted at the same technique as LaCie, and that is to include several platters on the same support, their dimension being higher to classic external drives.

Maxtor has also added Sync, a feature with the ability to automatically synchronize files between two or more systems on the same operating platform, to its newest external storage solution.

The 600 GB Maxtor OneTouch III Turbo Edition version is scheduled for this year's December and it will have a price tag of $550, while the 1 TB version will cost $900.
