Rockstar Games is busy preparing the launch of Max Payne 3 in May but the developer has also announced that it’s partnering with Marvel for a special three-part comic book series that acts as a prequel for the new game.

Max Payne 3 is set to deliver a whole new third person shooter experience that continues the story of Max Payne, everybody’s favorite grizzled New York detective.

While the story will see him go to Sao Paulo, Brazil, to get a new job as a private security contractor and to escape his inner demons, Rockstar will also show off what happened before this trip through a special three-part comic book series.

The three graphic novels are going to explore Max’s past and even feature some of the events from the first two games in the series, which first appeared many years ago from Remedy Entertainment.

“Written by Dan Houser and Remedy's Sam Lake, and featuring cover art from Greg Horn and pencils and inks by Fernando Blanco, this original Max Payne 3 comic series will delve into Max's troubled past - exploring the events that occurred in and around both Max Payne and Max Payne 2, leading up to Max Payne 3 while also shedding new light on Max's early years,” Rockstar said about the new series.

The first issue will be released in the next few weeks and is called “After the Fall”.

It will be available as a free digital download via the Max Payne 3 official website and through other digital comic book channels.

Once the series is complete, the comic book will also be released into retail stores in the form of special limited editions.

The actual Max Payne 3 game is set to appear in the middle of May for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles, and at the end of May for the PC platform.
