X Factor winner and clearly the nation’s favorite Matt Cardle is now riding the wave, with his debut single “When We Collide” landing straight at number 1 in UK Christmas charts, as expected.

Later last week, Matt also premiered the official video for the song, a cover of “Many Of Horror (When We Collide)” by Scottish band Biffy Clyro, with industry insiders saying he was in the running for the top spot in the charts.

Over the years, it’s become a tradition of sorts to have X Factor winners and former contestants grab the first positions in the singles charts in the UK right before Christmas.

Matt was certainly no exception, AceShowbiz reports: he landed straight at number 1 and is believed to keep a strong hold of the top spot for a while longer.

“Pop star Matt Cardle has shot to the top of the U.K. singles chart to score the coveted Christmas number one after claiming victory on Simon Cowell’s British reality TV show The X Factor last weekend,” AceShowbiz writes.

“Cardle’s ‘When We Collide’ debuts atop the holiday countdown, fighting off competition from Rihanna’s ‘What’s My Name’ at two, and The Trashmen’s ‘Surfin’ Bird’ entering at three,” says the same report.

As a fun fact, right before Matt performed “When We Collide” on the X Factor final, he did a duet with Rihanna: now, he’s battling her for supremacy in the UK charts.

“Michael Buble is at three with ‘Crazy Love’ and another reality TV star, Olly Murs, rounds out the top five with his self-titled disc at five,” AceShowbiz further reports.

“Meanwhile, Michael Jackson’s first posthumous release, ‘Michael,’ is the only new entry on the UK albums chart top 40, scrapping in at four. Boyband Take That make ‘Progress’ with another week at number one, while Rihanna’s ‘Loud’ climbs up two places to finish in second place,” the aforementioned e-zine says of the albums chart.

As we also noted several days ago, Matt’s single moved over 100,000 copies in its first day of release, therefore, it wasn’t that hard to imagine it take the top position in the charts.
