The designer has made some important changes

Paper is one of the newest themes designed for Linux systems and it has gathered a lot of users in the past few months, even if it's not even complete. Now the designer has updated it so that it works much better with GNOME Shell.

Themes are not usually made to work with all the available distros and the same is true for Paper. It's actually a theme for GTK+3 desktops (it will work on other GTK+2 and legacy desktop environments) and the designer has been working on it for quite some time. Even if it's not yet ready, it already has a lot of fans and users, not to mention that it's been integrated into a relatively new OS called Evolve.

Some of the more observant users will also notice that it's somewhat inspired by the Material Design from Google, although it's just an inspiration and not a driving force. It shares some of the design decisions, but only in a broad sense. In case you're not aware, Material Design is the new direction taken by Android 5 (Lollipop), just to have an idea.

Paper has been improved for GNOME Shell

Sam Hewitt, the designer of the Paper theme, has updated his work so that it blends better with the GNOME Shell, which is used in a large number of settings and distros. In fact, he says that this portion of the theme has been redesigned.

"Paper is a modern GTK3 desktop theme suite (I say "suite" because it is a bundle themes covering several desktop environments in one package). Its design is mostly flat with a subtle use of shadows and gradients for some depth. Paper's theme for GNOME shell is designed to compliment and be an extension the GTK theme –one reason why the two are bundled together," reads the official website.

It's pretty easy to install the theme, especially if you can make use of a PPA. Just open a terminal and enter the following commands:

code
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:snwh/pulp
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install paper-gtk-theme paper-icon-theme
The developer also provides a Paper icon theme, which can be released from the official website. If you can't use a PPA, the source package is also available on the same website.

Enjoy!
