After discontinuing TweetDeck, Twitter Inc. has released a major new update for its iOS client for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, delivering enhancements to search and other improvements.

Twitter 5.4 lets you see more topic and user suggestions for your search query, based on what’s happening in real time. Suggestions also pop up when the user adds a hashtag or username as he/she composes.

Top tweets marking big moments will pop out when you search for a given term, even if the tweets aren’t new. You can now see the related Tweet for more context when you open a web page, and you can simply pull the tray icon up or down to see or hide content.

Long conversations are easier to see in the Tweet details view, thanks to a new view that shows all of the replies to any tweet.

A new feature that many users craved for, tweets stemming from blocked people will instantly disappear from the Connect tab.

Other features include a smoother animation for the pull-to-refresh function in Discover, support for traditional Chinese, logout support in iOS 6, and additional bug fixes and improvements.

Also worth noting is that uploading videos to Mobypicture, Vodpod and Posterous is no longer supported.

The new Twitter 5.4 is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation), iPad 2 Wi-Fi, iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G, iPad (3rd generation), iPad Wi-Fi + 4G, iPad (4th generation), iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular (4th generation), iPad mini and iPad mini Wi-Fi + Cellular.

The app now requires iOS 5.0 or later and has been perfectly optimized for devices sporting a four-inch display (iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5th generation).
