There is no denying the fact that the United States, particularly its eastern and central regions, were severely affected by cold winter conditions throughout the month of January. A new image collected by a NASA satellite shows exactly how widespread winter conditions were just a few days ago.

The photo above was collected using the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument aboard the NASA Terra satellite, on Wednesday, January 29. It shows the extent of snowfall throughout the eastern parts of the country, including northern Georgia and South Carolina, western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee.

Some of these regions were especially hard-hit because they are unaccustomed to any type of snowfall at any time in the year. Parts of Tennessee, for example, got up to 5 centimeter (2 inches) of snow, while Atlanta, Georgia, got 6.6 centimeters (2.6 inches) of snow.

This entire portion of the US experienced significant traffic slowness over the past few days, primarily because local and state authorities do not have snow-clearing equipment. Historically, there has been no need to own such instruments. Now, these areas need to make do in whatever way they can, at least until the snow stops falling.
