The event was seen in detail, using an advanced NASA observatory

Using the NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), a group of solar physicists observed a massive, beautiful solar prominence emanating from the surface of the Sun. The event gave birth to an amazing coronal mass ejection (CME).

The latter threw massive amounts of solar matter into space, fortunately in a direction not aimed at Earth. The event took place yesterday, April 16, and peaked at around 1:45 pm EDT (1745 UTC).

Experts cataloged the ensuing solar flare as an M1 class (medium-sized) event. The flare was a lot less intense than a number of others that occurred earlier this year, and in late 2011, which were cataloged as X-class (the most massive the Sun can produce).

Since it began observing the Sun, SDO has produced amazing images of the star, and allowed scientists a much deeper view into its inner workings.
