Researchers are utterly clueless about what might have caused the hole to form

The online community is now abuzz with the news that, not too long ago, a massive hole estimated to measure dozens of feet across opened up out of the blue in a remote part of Siberia that some like to call the end of the world.

Local media reports say the hole's exact location is Russia's Yamal Peninsula. The odd geological formation has until now only been observed from afar, and researchers are utterly clueless about what might have caused it to form.

Shortly after being discovered, the hole, estimated to measure nearly 270 feet (approximately 82.3 meters) across, was filmed from an aircraft. Part of the footage obtained in this manner is available below.

As one can easily notice, the hole is encircled by a buildup of ground, which was probably displaced at the time when the peculiar geological formation came into being. Oddly enough, it appears to be bottomless.

What's more, the massive hole appears to be surrounded by nothing except good old vegetation. Simply put, there is no evidence of natural or man-made processes that might have caused the ground to collapse and birth this structure.

Interestingly enough, the hole's inner rim appears to be rather dark in color. Some believe this is due to the fact that the ground here was exposed to intense heat, and consequently, got burned. However, it might all boil down to the quality of the video.

Although this theory is yet to be confirmed, there are some researchers who suspect that the hole formed in the aftermath of an explosion involving gas, salt and water originating from a natural gas field in its proximity, Huffington Post informs.

By the looks of it, there is no evidence whatsoever that the hole is in fact a stunningly deep crater birthed by a meteorite that somehow escaped detection and crashed in this remote part of Russia without anybody witnessing the event.

“We can definitely say that it is not a meteorite. No details yet,” a spokesperson for Russia's Emergency Ministry reportedly told the press in a recent interview. Hopefully, it will not be long until more information is shared with the public.

Word has it that, shortly after the discovery of this mysterious hole in Siberia, high officials in Russia agreed to have a team of experts sent to the area. These researchers are expected to study the hole in detail and eventually make head and tail of its makeup.

While trying to understand how and why this massive hole opened in Siberia pretty much out of the blue, the scientists will analyze air, water, and soil samples. These samples should help them establish what it was that disturbed the ground to such an extent and in a surprisingly orderly fashion.
