BioWare, as the developer, and Electronic Arts, as the publisher, are sending word that Mass Effect 2 has managed to sell more than 2 million units since it was released on January 26 in North America and on January 29 in Europe. The hybrid between a role playing game and a cover-based shooter is available for the Xbox 360 home gaming console from Microsoft and the PC in both regular and deluxe editions.

The developer is claiming that at least 40 reviewers have awarded a perfect score to Mass Effect 2 and that the current Metacritic figures show it has achieved an average of 96, making it the second best reviewed game on the Microsoft platform. The company also quotes MSNBC as saying that “Mass Effect will go down as one of the most influential video game series of all-time.” Here at Softpedia, we also reviewed Mass Effect 2, awarding the PC version of the game a perfect score. Take a look at our analysis.

Ray Muzyka, who is a co-founder of BioWare and the current Group General Manager in charge of MMO and RPG development at EA, stated that “Mass Effect 2 is poised to be one of the biggest games of 2010. We could not be more proud of the game’s universal acclaim and early commercial success.”

Mass Effect 2 is built as the second part of a planned trilogy and the success of the title will probably draw more gamers to experience the first game in the series, which is also available on the Xbox 360 and the PC, and will make them fans of the experience, likely to also want to pick up Mass Effect 3, the final title in the saga that could arrive as early as 2011. The success of Mass Effect 2 is serving as a reminder of the rise in importance that BioWare, a developer responsible for launching Dragon Age: Origins in 2009, is seeing at Electronic Arts.
