Mass Effect 2, after gaining critical and sales success on the Xbox 360 at the beginning of the year, is getting ready to appear on the PlayStation 3 console, at the beginning of 2011, and, according to BioWare executive Greg Zeschuck, it will play differently than the Xbox 360 version.

Mass Effect has been one of the most popular Xbox 360 franchises, with the first title being published by Microsoft Game Studios.

But as the sequel was published by the new owner of BioWare, EA, this left the Canadian studio free to take the popular franchise to the PlayStation 3, fact which was announced a few months ago.

The game will get a special introduction, for anyone who hasn't played the first Mass Effect, and, according to Zeschuck, will be much different than the Xbox 360 version.

"The important thing is that, fundamentally, [PS3] has a very different architecture. Visually, there are probably some changes - I mean, there are differences in the way the memory is allocated, and the graphical processor is all different."

Don't expect the BioWare exec to get sucked into the console war, and proclaim one device's dominance over the other, though.

"We're not going to get pulled into the argument over which is the more powerful; at the end of the day, they both are, and we can do whatever we want on them. When you create games, you want as many people as possible to play them, so this is a great opportunity to reach a huge segment of the market.

He added: "It think it will play a little differently. I mean, right from the start, you have a different controller, and that alone will change the way the game feels."

Mass Effect 2 is set to be launched for the PlayStation 3 in January of 2011.
