Even with his Adamantium skeleton and his regenerative powers, Wolverine is still going to meet his maker pretty soon, according to a report by Entertainment Weekly. Marvel has apparently decided that the hundred or so years Wolverine has lived have been just about enough, and they plan to start a series of comics called “Death of Wolverine.”

Comic book fans will be aware of the new twist in Wolverine's narrative that will debut this summer and that is called “3 Months to Die.” In it, Logan is robbed of his very useful healing and regenerative powers that have kept him fit and young for all these years, as well as saved him from countless otherwise fatal injuries.

This story is announced to be continued by a 4-part miniseries that is set to appear in September and called pretty straightforwardly “Death of Wolverine.” That means that on September 24, 2014, Wolverine is going to die, once issue #4 hits shelves.

Michael Marts, executive editor at Marvel, explains the decision to kill one of the franchise's most famous and successful characters: “For a long time, no matter who Wolverine was battling, he’s been the eternal victor. He almost always comes out on top. Now he finally comes up against an adversary that he cannot win against, he cannot fight. What does that mean for this character who’s been around for hundred years?”

Marvel writer Charles Soule explains that this final chapter in Wolverine's life is meant to be a retrospective for him as well as his audience: “He’s reflecting on his own life as he’s reflecting on his own death. We wanted to have the reader do that at the same time. In each issue, we’re focusing on a different aspect, or a different quintessential Wolverine.”

Soule isn't giving away any of the details, but he does give one hint: “He’s basically been told, by his various genius buddies, to not get into any fights, because he can’t survive them. Wolverine being Wolverine, violence tends to find him.”

Marvel is also addressing the issue of Wolverine's death and its saying that it's going to be final. This is because superheroes that die off in the comics have this habit of making a return in other storylines or universes, but the comic giant assures us that that won't happen this time with Wolverine.

The writers are approaching this series “from a standpoint of finality, of closure,” meaning that you'll have to say goodbye to your favorite weird-haired mutant. As you can expect, his demise is going to have a deep impact on the Marvel universe: “You’re gonna be entering into a world without Wolverine. That affects not only his teammates, but also the Marvel Universe at large. We’ve got a lot of things in the works already.”
