Whatever changes Marvel may have hinted at in these past few months, nothing could have prepared fans for this: after the introduction of the female Thor and the All New Captain America, who is no longer Steve Rogers, the studio is announcing a brand new Iron Man, one that will be “hard to root for.”

First things first: Thor is no longer a man, with Marvel announcing a few days ago that the new series of comic books to premiere in the fall would feature a female Thor. The change is permanent, they say.

Then, Steve Rogers is incapacitated and he won’t be able to wield the Captain’s shield anymore, so he’s passing it to Sam Wilson, formerly known as Falcon.

These two will also appear in a new comic book series called Avengers NOW!, together with a brand new Iron Man, EW confirms. A photo of Iron Man’s new costume is included above: Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso says that it was inspired by Apple products, and even jokingly describes it as “the Genius Bar costume.”

The reference is pretty self-explanatory: the once red and yellow costume is now all-white. It looks much sleeker but also more dangerous and, we’re thinking, this is the whole idea behind it because Tony Stark will be a changed man in this new series. Changed for the worse, that is.

In the Superior Iron Man comics, which premieres in November, with writer Tom Taylor and artist Yildiray Cinar on board, Tony moves from New York to San Francisco, where he plans to introduce the Extremis technology to all residents of the city.

Mashable says he will attempt to do so via a mobile app promising “beauty, perfection... and possibly immortality,” which, in turn, “throws Stark’s status as one of the good guys into question.”

Safe to say, things won’t go as planned, and “Superior Iron Man [becomes] a character that’s hard to root for,” Alonso explains. Tony Stark has always had problems stemming from his overinflated ego, but they were never as out of control as they will be in this new series.

“What we’re doing here is a little different — it’s Tony Stark, the one and only Tony Stark — and in the aftermath of the Axis event, he will surrender to his id and his legendary ego. You’ll see Tony in a new place spiritually and intellectually,” the Editor-in-Chief stresses.

“What you're seeing in Superior Iron Man is a Tony Stark who’s seen both his worst and best impulses all let loose. It is Tony, but he’s going to be in a zone now where he’s never been. He's more ambitious, cunning, egotistical... all of those quantities are unharnessed,” Alonso continues.

We’ll see how Stark manages to get things under control again, with Superior Iron Man and the Avengers NOW! series. Speaking of the Avengers, here they are, after Marvel’s “reboot”:
