Martha Stewart is the latest celebrity to join the ongoing fight against the use of gestation crates by people in the business of breeding and raising pigs.

For those unaware, gestation crates are basically really small cages that female pigs are kept in while pregnant.

Animal rights activists have long argued that, since these cages are so small that the pigs don't even have enough room to turn, their use in farms is no more and no less than a horrific example of cruelty to animals.

By the looks of it, Martha Stewart shares their views.

“These animals have committed no crime, yet they’re treated worse than even the most violent criminals would be treated. No prisoner in our state – or country, for that matter – is kept in a cage so small he can’t turn around for months on end,” the celebrity writes in an open letter addressed to legislators in New Jersey.

In her letter, Martha Stewart asks that the state's lawmakers issue a ban on the use of gestation crates for pigs as soon as possible.

“This is torture, and we shouldn’t permit it to be inflicted on anyone, especially animals who have done nothing to deserve such callous punishment,” she says, as cited by Ecorazzi.

Given the fact that, according to recent surveys, nearly 91% of the people living in New Jersey disapprove of gestation crates, odds are it is only a matter of time until one such ban is implemented.
