Nintendo has managed to boost sales of the Nintendo Wii home gaming console on the Japanese market and conquer the videogame chart with the release of New Super Mario Bros. Wii and the game shows no sign of being ready to relinquish its top spot, even with the international blockbuster Modern Warfare 2 from Infinity Ward and Activision.

For the week that ended on December 13, the Mario-powered videogame sold another 431,000 copies, which is huge when taking into account the fact that prior to its release, Wii titles sold less than 50,000 during one week.

The Nintendo Wii, which has had a slowdown in sales lately, moved no less than 135,898 units in one week, but its rivals also got a boost, on account of the holidays. The PlayStation 3 from Sony managed to sell 75,086 consoles in seven days, coming at number two just ahead of the PlayStation Portable handheld that managed to reach 71,885 units.

The regular DSi sits at 68,184, while the DSi LL is at 58,006, the older DS Lite being at 11,376. Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 from Microsoft has not managed to rise past its usual 10,000 in sales, the PSP Go shaping up to be a big disappointment in Japan, only managing to beat out the PS2 in terms of units moved.

When it comes to videogames, Tales of Graces from Namco Bandai, also a Nintendo Wii title, has taken second spot in the chart, with 143,000 copies sold in its debut week, while Tomodachi Collection from Nintendo for the DS handheld has managed to sell more than 100,000 units again, getting to third spot coming up from sixth.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, published by Square Enix in Japan, has succeeded in selling 93,000 units on the PlayStation 3, while Naruto Shippuden Narutimate Accel 3 for the PSP is fifth with 77,000 units sold.
