Mariah Carey is breaking her silence on the terrible loss she suffered when singer Whitney Houston died. Contrary to what people believed, they weren't rivals, they were actually good friends, Mariah says in a new interview on Good Morning America.

On the show to raise awareness on the fact that February is Heart Month, but also to promote her partnership with Weight Watchers, a program that has helped her get back in shape after the pregnancy, Mariah opened up on a variety of topics.

One of them was also that of Whitney's passing. She was at the funeral last weekend and she is still very much in pain. She had nothing but love and respect for Whitney, Carey said.

“I’m almost incapable of talking about this still,” Mariah said, adding that she was “heartbroken and in tears” when she found out about the tragic accident.

“It’s very heavy emotionally, especially just looking at that little bit of [footage] of us together, but it was great,” the singer added.

She could never understand why people, fans and the media alike, always pitted them against each other: they were friends.

“And I don’t think people could ever understand our relationship. There was always this supposed rivalry in the beginning and then we did the duet and we became friends and I saw her towards the end and I loved her,” Mariah said.

“We all were inspired by her and we all loved her. May she rest in peace and her legend’s gonna go on forever,” she added, before talking a bit about the tribute ceremony, which Mariah believed was very “classy.”

In the same interview, Mariah also talked a bit about her husband Nick Cannon and how his condition is improving, now that he's decided to take some time off from work to see to his health.

She also said a few words about her plans for a new album – and her fans are going to love this one: she will be debuting a new song in a week's time, so keep an eye on this space for when this happens.
