Mariah Carey finally got the acceptance and praise she’s been looking for ever since she first decided to have a go with acting, when her part in “Precious” was awarded with the Breakthrough Artist at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. At this year’s People’s Choice Awards, the singer explained why her acceptance speech of the night before had been so slurred: she was tipsy.

When she got up on stage at the Palm Springs Festival to accept her award, Mariah seemed to have serious trouble putting two and two together to formulate a phrase. Even more, she began her acceptance speech by excusing herself in front of the packed audience, with one member shouting back at her that she was “drunk,” to which she replied laughing, “Yeah!” The explanation for the entire slurred speech is simple, Mariah said the other night: she was, indeed, a bit drunk.

Of course, that’s not to say the singer downed bottles and bottles of alcohol before taking to the stage. As she also told reporters backstage at the 2010 People’s Choice Awards, what happened is that, usually, the atmosphere at such events is very “celebratory,” which means that guests can be easily “tricked” into having one sip too many of champagne. This is exactly what happened to her too, the singer said. Plus, she hadn’t eaten that much the entire day.

“We’d been sitting there celebrating this whole time, having little splashes [of champagne], I hadn’t eaten, I pulled up, I didn’t want to be late so I rushed in, and that’s what it was,” Carey said of her slurred speech at the famed film festival. Still, haters would better back off, because Mariah would not be dealing with them in any other way than by ignoring them, she went on to say. “If people don’t understand me and just think I’m this girl that stands by a microphone and sings ‘Hero,’ then they’re definitely not going to get me,” the singer concluded, very matter-of-factly.

Below is the video of Mariah Carey explaining to reporters the reason behind her slurred speech at the Palm Springs International Film Festival of the night before.
