It’s official: Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon are expecting their first child this spring

It was one of the worst kept secrets in showbiz but now it’s not a secret anymore: Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon have just confirmed they’re expecting their first child together.

The “is she or isn’t she?” debate around Mariah has been going on for months, with many an insider vouching the singer was with child. Now, Mariah and Nick themselves are doing all the talking.

In a recent interview cited by Billboard Magazine, the happy couple confirms the excellent news, explains why they’ve kept mum for so long, and reveals Mariah miscarried a couple of years ago.

“Yes, we are pregnant – this is true,” the singer says, beaming. “It’s been a long journey, but it’s been tough because I’ve been trying to have, like I said, to hold onto a shred of privacy, and that was not easy,” she adds.

The singer says she’s due in spring, but refuses to name a more concrete date. She won’t talk about whether it’s a boy or a girl either because she doesn’t know yet.

However, this is not the first time that Mariah’s been pregnant, she reveals in the same interview. The same happened in 2008 and, just one day before announcing the family, she miscarried.

“We took the test and it was positive, and we were like, is this real?” the singer says of finding out she was with child in 2008. Then, she learned she wasn’t pregnant anymore.

It was really sad, so we just really had to absorb this and take it in,” Mariah says. Nick chimes in, stressing the strength she showed back then to “be during the day so festive, smiling for cameras and spending time with everyone, and then literally at night, crying herself to sleep.”

“It’s absolutely emotional. The greatest gift on Earth is a child,” Cannon adds of how she feels at the idea of being a father.

As also noted above, neither Nick nor Mariah are willing to talk about whether they’ll be having a boy or a girl because they don’t know yet; they have no plans of doing so either, having decided to “wait.”

In the same interview, Billboard writes, Mariah also denies she had IVF treatment to help her become pregnant, saying she “conceived naturally with Nick.”
