Maria Conchita Alonso, the famous Cuban-Venezuelan actress, has come under serious fire after doing an ad with California state lawmaker Tim Donnelly for his campaign for California governor. Donnelly is a Tea Party Republican and is very firm on measures that should be taken against illegals.

In the ad, glimpses of which you can also see in the video report below, Alonso is seen holding a Chihuahua named Tequila, which is actually her real dog, translating in Spanish what Donnelly says about his plans for when he becomes governor of California.

The fact that Alonso would endorse a Republican was criticized just as much as the fact that she would accept to do a political ad that seems to feed on misconceptions and stereotypes about Latinos, it is being said.

Because backlash against her after the ad came out was so harsh, Alonso chose to quit a play she was supposed to do in San Francisco. Even if she hadn’t quit, she would have been fired by the producers because they’d already told the press they no longer wanted her on board because of her political views.

Fox News Latino has an interview with Maria Conchita on the topic, in which she explains the kind of negative response she received after the ad, as well as her decision to accept Donnelly’s offer. The ad is available in full above.
