Blizzard is working on such a feature

The new and improved Battle.net system, used by Blizzard in order to chart the progress of gamers who own any of its titles, has been the target of a lot of blame lately as you will have to use it if you want to play the upcoming StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty title, which, sadly, was delayed until 2010.

But while it will have a function similar to DRM software, it will also be the platform for many high-end features for everyone involved in playing games made by the company. One such interesting feature will be the ability to create new maps for StarCraft II, by using the supplied map editor, and then sell them on a virtual marketplace in the Battle.net system.

Revealed by Blizzard's executive vice president of game design, Rob Pardo, at last week's BlizzCon, the new feature will split the maps into two categories, a free one that everyone can contribute and a premium one, filled with maps from various modders.

The profit generated from the sales of these maps will be split between Blizzard and the creators, and, hopefully, will lead to more high-end content for everyone who will buy StarCraft II when it will be launched next year. “This is really an opportunity for them to share in the rewards of our success,” said Pardo.

Mind you that the feature won't be available straight away when the game will be launched as the company has many things to fine tune in regard to the system that will be used. It might be a good idea though to start rounding up your map, making buddies and polishing up your talents for when it will be unveiled and perhaps you might make a few extra bucks by using your skills and, of course, splitting it with Blizzard.
