3D printing technology is something that the press talks about a lot, me included, but the unfortunate reality is that most people don't know about it or don't know enough about it to try and see for themselves what it's all about.

Manhattan store 3D Heights is actively working towards eliminating that general lack of knowledge.

Owner Jerry Castanos has chosen a proactive approach when it comes to getting potential customers hooked on 3D printing.

His idea is pretty straightforward really: since it's lack of knowledge and experience that puts people off 3D printing, teach them!

So he does just that. Once a customer enters, Castanos asks them who they are and what they do for a living, or other questions meant to reveal what 3D printing can do for them.

So if a photographer walks in, Castanos shows them how 3D printing can be used to produce physical photography. If they're medics, he explains how 3D printers can create prosthetics.

Also, he apparently gets quite annoyed when people automatically link 3D printing with guns. Alas, that's what we get for guns being among the first 3D printed items shared over the world wide web.

The 3D Heights shop has been open since before Christmas and and even offers classes on how to use the technology.
