Mandriva has just announced the availability of the first update to its business-oriented offering, Mandriva Enterprise Server 5.1. The update builds on the strengths of Mandriva Enterprise Server 5 (MES 5) and focuses more on virtualization. It also comes with a new installation wizard and the Mandriva Directory Server tool and API.

"The update of MES 5 is going to allow our customers to take advantage of the last novelties, and to offer them an efficiency and a simplicity of management still increased. With the challenge to carve costs out of IT budgets, the flexibility, reliability and simplicity of an Enterprise Linux subscription has more value to customers than ever," Damien Chrisment, head of project MES 5," said in the official press release.

Highlights of Mandriva Enterprise Server 5.1:

· New virtualization features, complete with the KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) technology, and admin tools for them; · Mandriva Directory Server (MDS), a tool designed to spread the workload to colleagues and a complete API for it; · A new instalation wizard focused on reducing boot-up time which allows "Open Source bricks pre-configured by Mandriva" to be installed easily;

Mandriva touts the modularity and flexibility of Mandriva Enterprise Server 5.1 as one of its main advantages. The release aims to provide a powerful server environment which is easy and fast to deploy and manage. Preconfigured specialized server configurations and packages are built into MES 5.1 and the company says it only takes 15 minutes to deploy the operating system.

Mandriva Enterprise Server 5.1 is available at €299 with one year of updates and support and at €799 for three years. The release has a five-year life cycle and will be supported until 2014. However, Mandriva Enterprise Server 5.1 is available under a trial license for free.
