On April 12, 2013, the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced that Manda Packing Company was to expand its April 10 recall concerning some of the meat products it manufactured and marketed.

Thus, the new recall targets a total of 468,000 pounds (212,281 kilograms) of the following meat products: roast beef, ham, turkey breast, tasso pork, ham shanks, hog head cheese, corned beef, and pastrami.

The meat products are believed to have been contaminated with a bacterium known as Listeria monocytogenes.

The “sell by” dates of the meat products listed under this recall are between May 13 and July 2, 2013, the Food Safety and Inspection Service informs us.

Said organization also says that the products now being recalled by Manda Packing Company might have already been sliced at retail delis.

However, they wish to reassure the public that measures meant to cut the customer's access to these products are being taken.

“FSIS was alerted to the problem by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, who took an intact sample of cooked roast beef at a retail establishment on April 5, 2013, which later confirmed positive for Listeria monocytogenes,” the Food Safety and Inspection Service says.

Furthermore, “The recall is now being expanded because of additional samples from additional production dates which returned positive for Listeria monocytogenes. FSIS and the company have received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of these products.”

According to a press release issued by Mada Packing Company on April 14, the meat products now pulled off shelves have all been manufactured at their Baker, Louisiana facility.

The company also wished to stress the fact that the sausages they manufactured at their facility in Baton Rouge were safe for consumption.

“We have notified all of our distributors and the affected products have been pulled from the shelves. We are also working with our distributors to ensure consumers have a way to return products that were already purchased,” reads a statement issued by Manda Packing Company.

“We are committed to working with the USDA to review and enhance our food safety system so we can continue to ensure that our products are safe, wholesome and worthy of our brand name. Our customers deserve no less,” the company adds.
