The man is so absorbed in whatever it is that he is doing on his phone that he doesn't see a whale swimming next to him

Millions of people in this world would do just about anything to get the chance to come face to face with a humpback whale. The guy in the photo below, on the other hand, seems much more concerned with staring at his phone.

That's right, somebody, i.e. this unlucky dude, missed the chance to have a look at a humpback whale that surfaced right next to him because he was too busy pushing his phone's each and every button.

The image, posted on Instagram by photographer Eric J. Smith, was taken earlier this year, in January, in the waters off the coast of Redondo Beach in California, US. The photographer says that, all the while that he watched him, the man never looked up from his phone.

True, it might be that the man had a real emergency and that this was the reason he couldn't look away from his phone even for a short while, just to sneak a peek at the marine mammal that was swimming right next to his boat. Then again, the fact remains that this photo is quite depressing.

“He could have been texting his mom in the hospital for all I know, but I thought it sucked that he missed such a wonderful moment happening just two feet in front of him,” photographer Eric J. Smith told the press in an interview, as cited by Daily Mail.
