Residents in Lewes, Delaware have had a surprise fall from the sky this weekend. Reports say that $10,000 (€7,480) were dropped over the little town.

A helicopter was used to hand over the cash, and it hovered over Lewes Harbor for a few moments, on Saturday, August 17.

The money was left by a mystery benefactor who wanted the money to be given out before passing away.

“This is probably the most exciting things that has happened here I assume. [...] It was just so fast - you know,” Kara Miele tells WBOC.

Miele works in the marina, at Irish Eyes, and she describes people not knowing what was falling to the ground.

When her customers realized that they were being thrown large bills, they jumped out of their seats and headed outside.

“Nobody really knew what was happening until it happened. [… ]And once the commotion of it all like - You could see that they were yelling that it was money and then everyone knew it was money. And then the customers ran over and we ran over,” she says.

She added that people were civilized and that the incident did not prompt any brawls.

“Nobody was like fighting with each other for it but everyone was just scrambling trying to grab everything they could,” she details.

News traveled fast and attracted locals who were in the marina area at the time. Irish Eyes' bartender John Siddons mentions the cash being launched atop a parking lot, but then being carried by the wind in the water.

"People were swimming through the canal. [...] Boats coming in, scooping it up with nets. 50s, 20s, 10s, 5s - whatever they could get. It was pretty crazy," he says.

Bill Swords noted that it all happened so fast, that they did not have time to capture photos of the incident.

“I wanted to get some pictures to show some people. [...] Because nobody believes you when you tell them there was literally $10,000 (€7,480)  dropped from the sky,” he remembers.
