And not only?

People with malicious intentions lurking around on the Internet will take advantage of anything and anyone they can. Not once have I stumbled upon fake profiles of artists - all on social networking websites. I have no idea why people build up such profiles, but if it has anything to do with hacking, then it's got to be part of a multi stage attack. Still, the reason behind building fake profiles of stars escapes me.

I'm thinking that probably some people want to slander others' names, that's why they resort to this. It seems that the most recent target of such actions has been the "Wigan Warriors" rugby team from the UK. On their website, they've issued a warning that some users of MySpace are imitating Warriors players, and furthermore the players have nothing to do with this. The users that are behind the face profiles have been making foul and abusive comments in the players' names, as the same site warns.

Authorities have been notified about this and the issue will be taken care of, but I just can't help wondering what could one win out of such an action, because I cannot see any advantage that may come out of it.

It is a known fact that most rugby-players are not tech-savvy, and this is not an insult, they just prefer sports to computers. Taking advantage of this fact is low, if you ask me, but luckily, other people can take care of the matters that the players cannot tackle.

This thing sort of resembles identity theft, but is not as severe, since it has nothing to do with money, it's just some people impersonating others, for unknown purposes. Also, as seen on the team's site, they say that the people who are behind the fake profile are clearly not fans of the Wigan Warriors.
