This past Sunday night, members of the HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) and law enforcement officers raided a major dogfighting ring in Mississippi. During this raid, several alleged dogfighters were arrested, and a total of 20 animals were rescued and taken to a shelter.

At the time when the HSUS members and the law enforcement officers arrived at the property where the fights were taking place, around 200 dogfighting enthusiasts were present at the event.

While some of them chose to flee, others did not shy away from opening fire against the officers, sources say.

Presently, the police are busy trying to locate and arrest the dogfighting attendees that managed to run away during all the commotion.

“Law enforcement agents entered the property as the dogfight was in progress and came under fire by several of the more than 200 attendees. The investigation is still ongoing for numerous individuals who fled from the scene,” reads the official website for the Humane Society of the United States.

“The raid was the outcome of a multi-agency investigation and involved tracking suspected dogfighters from around the country as they traveled to the match on a property in rural Benton County,” the organization further explains.

The 20 dogs that were rescued and taken to an animal shelter are to receive appropriate veterinary treatment. Apparently, two of these dogs display clear signs of having been involved in fights.

Members of the HSUS wish to stress the fact that their injuries will be properly dealt with by trained staff.

Once the dogs have their wounds treated, they are to have their behavior assessed by professionals so as to determine whether or not they can be rehabilitated and placed in new homes.

“The Humane Society of the United States is proud to assist the dedicated officers in Marshall and Benton counties to crack down on a dogfighting ring that spanned the country,” HSUS representative Chris Schindler told members of the press.
