Cooking Mama should not be targeted

Majesco is not happy that PETA decided to target its Cooking Mama title as being an example of how animals are wrongly depicted by the gaming industry.

PETA produced and distributed a Web based game called Cooking Mama: Mama Kills Animals depicting the main character of the Majesco series as it kills, quite gruesomely, some animals which are used in cooking the recipes that are presented in the casual title.

The idea is to shock players enough so that they decide not to play the game anymore and join the fight against the inhuman treatment of animals. The PETA powered protest was supposed to be synchronized with the launch window of Cooking Mama: World Kitchen, the next installment in the franchise.

Majesco has wasted little time in pointing out its game is not as vegetarian unfriendly as PETA would like to make it. There are vegetarian dishes like miso soup, rice cakes, chocolate chip cookies, French fries, pancakes and ratatouille.

Majesco has tried to be open in its press release by revealing that 25 of the 51 recipes in the game are vegetarian and quoted the Cooking Mama herself as saying that “I would never put rat in my Ratatouille. Like any accomplished cook, I create my recipes to appeal to a broad range of tastes and preferences. My only goal is to ensure you leave the table well fed”. Mama also points out to how good she treats her own dog, Max.

The casual game publisher says it might look into further vegetarian recipes to be added to the series.

Cooking Mama: World Kitchen is specifically designed for the Nintendo Wii, whereas the other releases were aimed at the Nintendo DS. It was launched in North America, with Japan and Europe set to get the game in the near future.
