Adoption papers have already been filed, officials confirm

Just like she did when she adopted little David Banda in 2006, Madonna is moving fast this time as well, when she’s heading to Malawi to take home a baby girl. Although the singer herself confirmed that she was thinking about adopting another child a little over a week ago, officials in Malawi are saying that the adoption papers have already been filed, with Madonna expected to fly there over the weekend to take the baby girl home, as The Associated Press and several other media outlets inform.

“Officials say Madonna is to travel to Malawi to try to adopt a second child from the impoverished African country. An official at the Malawi welfare department said Thursday that the pop star has filed adoption papers. Another person in Malawi close to the case says that Madonna will be in Malawi this weekend and a court could hear her adoption case as soon as Monday. They both spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the subject.” the AP reports.

In the meanwhile, tabloids and celebrity magazines, both local and national, claim that Madonna’s visit to the country over the weekend is almost a given. Even more, the Daily Mail claims, the singer has already set her eyes on a baby girl named Mercy James, who is four years old and has already been moved from the orphanage to an exclusive lodge in preparation for her flight to the US with Madonna.

“Mercy has been handed over to Madonna’s people, who are already at the lodge, and is being cared for by a nanny. They are waiting for Madonna to arrive so mother and daughter can be united and then Madonna is expected to take Mercy with her when she leaves.” an unnamed source tells the aforementioned British publication. As a side note, this would come to contradict the AP report, which clearly notes that nothing will be settled until Monday, when authorities will review Madonna’s file.

As noted above, earlier this month, Madonna herself confirmed that she was considering expanding her family by adopting another baby from Malawi. “Many people, especially our Malawian friends, say that David should have a Malawian brother or sister. It’s something I have been considering, but would only do, if I had the support of the Malawian people and the Government.” the singer explained at the time.
