GfK Chart Track Limited has announced a top five of the best selling videogames of the last quarter. The chart covers the period from July to September 2008 in the three biggest videogames markets, the United States, United Kingdom and Japan.

Electronic Arts must be really content with the results. Madden NFL 2009, the American football simulation, has managed to be the best sold game of the quarter, with 2,994,000 copies moved in the timeframe. Amazingly, an overwhelming majority of these, which means about 2,958,000 units, were sold on the North American market, with only about 1,000 units of the game moved in Japan.

Wii Fit, made by Nintendo, has taken the second spot, with sales that only just topped 2,000,000 units. Again, the game was most popular in the United States, with 1,283,000 copies sold, but the United Kingdom and Japan were also very interested in the title.

Surprisingly, given the somewhat negative reviews it has been getting, the LucasArts made Star Wars: The Force Unleashed has managed to take third spot, with a total of 1,738,000 units sold. The game is not sold in Japan at the moment, which means that it could have probably gone even higher in the chart if it did.

At number four, we find Pokemon Platinum, even though the videogame is only available for sale in Japan, which shows the power of the Pokemon brand. At number five, Nintendo has another game, Mario Kart Wii, which managed to sell 1,468,000 units.

The report also says that “the world's three largest games markets experienced [a] growth of 1% during third quarter 2008.” It will be interesting to see how this chart looks in another three months, considering the fact that we've witnessed the launch of Fallout 3, Red Alert 3, Gears of War 2 and Resistance 2.
