Developer Avalanche Studios has unveiled a series of screenshots from the upcoming Mad Max video game, showing off its unique aesthetic and premise.

The game is based on the cult classic movie, and it will be released later this year, alongside the film series' resurgence at the hands of original director George Miller. Mad Max: Fury Road is due in theaters on May 15, 2015, and Avalanche Studios' game will be dropping this fall.

The studio is best known for its open world action smorgasbord series Just Cause, so it's highly likely that Mad Max won't just end up being a quick cash grab banking on the movie's notoriety. Just Cause 3 is also in the making, looking to drive the chaos meter through the roof, expected at the end of 2015.

The post-apocalyptic grunge thriller will feature a ton of interesting and gruesome mechanics, including the need for players to scavenge for food and supplies, which will be pretty scarce, considering that all the action takes place in a giant desolate desert.

The new screenshots show the game's atmospheric visuals and bloody combat system, inspired by the mechanics of the Batman: Arkham series. Aside from throwing punches in the sand, players will also be able to battle from within their custom-built vehicles, a couple of which can be seen in the gallery below.

A hi-octane post-apocalyptic adventure

The events in the game will be different from the ones in the movie, offering a different take on the unlikely wasteland where everybody is savage and insane, but somehow there's fresh gasoline for everyone.

The storyline will follow Max, who wakes up nearly dead in the desert and then embarks on a rescue mission to recover his trusty sidekick, the Interceptor, the Road Warrior's iconic car.

Gamers will be able to roam the wasteland using various vantage points to scout for settlements and points of interest, the most notable of which are going to be the strongholds of Scrotus' gang, which players will have to liberate in order to reduce his influence on the world.

Mad Max is currently scheduled to come out on September 1 in North America, September 2 in Australasia, and September 4 in Europe, headed to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows PC and Linux platforms.
