A new “brick” on the block

Tired of Brick rumors? We didn't think so. Therefore, here's what we found (click picture to enlarge). The first thing you need to know about this clean looking MacBook mini is that it packs a 1.6GHz Atom processor, 1GB or memory, 80GB storage, and runs Mac OS X 10.5.2 Leopoard like a charm.

The other thing you need to know is that this is not a Mac. It's actually an MSI Wind hacked to run an early version of OS X Leopard, but it does come close to some recent Apple “brick” rumors.

Created by Spanky, and posted over at the German MSI Wind web forum, the “MacBook mini” received nothing but positive comments. “I just wanted you finished imagine [sic] Apple mod. This is already a little bit closer to the original,” Spanky writes. Some of the posters are already eager to craft out their own, asking questions like how to provide the necessary parts and materials, the methods used to illuminate the Apple logo on the back of the Hackintosh, and more.

Spanky could confirm to the anxious forum users that the Apple logo had been milled from a simple plastic casing. As for lighting it up, he used 6 white SMD LEDs. “Actually, I wanted to take luminous film but the inverter that I've found were all too big,” Spanky writes. Asked how he was able to make the effect stay true to Apple's MacBooks, or what he included as a power supply for the LEDs, Spanky revealed he had drained power from the USB jack, while the back side of the display had to be covered in black tape, “otherwise you have the LEDs on the display seen through,” he said.

According to the maker of this cool piece of Mac mod, there were some drawbacks with having to use LEDs. We couldn't quite make out what those were from the English translation. What we could understand was that Spanky said he'd appreciate it if someone came up with a solution to invert the luminescent film. Any thoughts?
