Apple seemingly failed to resolve all the problems reported by early adopters of its new MacBook Air laptops, but hopes to do so with the release of EFI Firmware Update 2.0 which should address the issues where MacBook Air boots or wakes to a black screen, or becomes unresponsive.

A note on the Mac maker’s Support site reveals that MacBook Air EFI Firmware Update 2.0 is recommended for MacBookAir (11-inch and 13-inch, late 2010) models.

Apple claims that “this update resolves a rare issue where MacBook Air boots or wakes to a black screen or becomes unresponsive. This update is recommended for all 11-inch and 13-inch MacBook Air (late 2010) models,” it outlines.

As usual, the company proceeds to instruct customers to properly prepare for applying the update. The first step is to ensure your MacBook Air is connected to a power source via the MagSafe power adapter.

“The MacBook Air EFI Update will update the EFI firmware on your notebook computer. Your computer's power cord must be connected and plugged into a working power source,” Apple stresses.

“When your MacBookAir restarts, a gray screen will appear with a status bar to indicate the progress of the update,” the company elaborates.

According to the technical note, the update will complete in a few minutes, therefore customers are advised to “not disturb or shut off the power on your MacBookAir during this update.”

Users are also encouraged to check their Boot ROM version to ensure they’ve done everything accordingly:

“Boot ROM or SMC Version Information: After this update has successfully completed, your Boot ROM Version will be: MBA31.88Z.0061.B01.1011181342,” Apple states. “The ROM itself is: 0061.01,” the tech note adds.
