People familiar with the latest Mac OS X 10.5.7 test build (9J34) say the next maintenance and security update to Leopard should arrive with updated speech support. While there are no specific details at this time, OS X 10.5.7 is said to pack enhancements to the speech dictionary, probably increasing emphasis on synthesis, according to AppleInsider.

The site points out to the recent changes to iTunes needed to support the third-generation iPod shuffle, as evidence that Leopard is getting the same improvements. Reportedly, Leopard is getting improved speech dictionary that will enhance its text-to-speech capabilities. Build 9J34 is also said to fix eight significant bugs, relating to issues such as color corruption, sleep problems, and problems with syncing Mail signatures, while 22 core components are actively being tested.

Areas in need of further testing include: AFP; AirPort; Bluetooth; Directory Services; FileSync; Flash Player; GraphicsDrivers; iCal; iDisk Synching; Mail; Managed Client; MobileMe Synching; Networking; Parental Controls; Printing; Screen Sharing; Sound; Time Machine; USB & Flash Drives; VPN; Widgets and X11. Currently, the build weighs in at 440MB, but Apple is said to be preparing a 730MB (combo) update for Leopard users.

Apple is known to have been adding a variety of advanced text related features in Snow Leopard as well. These improvements have been added across all applications using Core Text. Snow Leopard will boast automatic spell correction that will replace words such as 'teh' or 'spelll' with a hit of the spacebar. All applications are to benefit from this feature.

Mac OS X 10.5.7, code-named "Juno," is likely to be released sometime next month, AppleInsider's sources say. The seed notes for build 9J34, the latest reported seed, list but one issue that has been plaguing the development of OS X 10.5.7 for three separate seeds now – Safari 4 Beta only installs on Mac OS X 10.5.6.
