Unlike the Oscars and many other awards galas in the yearly awards season, the MTV Movie Awards are not so much about what critics liked but about what audiences did. In this respect, you can almost say that they’re more “relevant” because they offer a better look at the favorites of the public.

And last night at the 2014 edition of the MTV Movie Awards, the big favorite was definitely “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” the second installment in the hugely successful film franchise based on the young-adult novels by Suzanne Collins.

The film took home the “biggest” award of the night, that of Movie of the Year, beating heavy-weights “12 Years a Slave,” “American Hustle,” and “The Wolf of Wall Street,” but also fan-favorite “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.” These first 3 movies were definitely the biggest releases of the last year, also winning several major industry accolades, Oscars included.

Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, who play Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark in “The Hunger Games” franchise, took home the golden popcorn statuette for Best Female and Best Male Performance, respectively.

This being a more hip and loose-tie affair, categories also included Best Kiss, Best Shirtless Performance, and Best Fight. Winners did not disappoint in taking to the stage to accept their awards, with winner of Best Shirtless Performance, Zac Efron, for instance, ripping off his shirt to show off his six-pack and bulging muscles to all those in the audience who were yet to see the movie he won for, “That Awkward Moment.”

Other highlights of the night included Mila Kunis winning Best Villain and making a point of stressing that she was the only woman nominated in the category. Mila caused some commotion earlier in the night as well, as she walked the red carpet in a little black dress that barely hid her baby bump – she is expecting her first child with fiancé Ashton Kutcher, but they’re yet to confirm the happy news.

Eminem and Rihanna performed their latest duet, “Monster,” and were dubbed the “cutest” on-stage couple. Ellie Goulding was also among the musical acts.

Though the night was definitely star-studded, from various reports online, we can say with certainty that it was nothing compared to previous years. In fact, only a handful of those nominated actually attended, but celebrity guests / presenters did their best to compensate.

But more on that later. Meanwhile, here is the complete list of winners: check it out to see if your favorite made the cut.
