The American music channel MTV has managed to prove itself successful in the mobile phone industry as well. We all know what MTV is all about, and the fact that the MTV Mobile managed to reach 1 million subscribers in France since its launch last year on April 23rd might not come as a surprise.

Most of you probably already know that MTV and SFR, the second largest cell phone carrier in France, launched MTV Mobile last year, but what you might not know is the fact that the large number of subscribers is complemented by sales of more than 100,000 MTV-branded mobile phones, among which the MTV 3.4, launched back in November 2008, is also included.

MTV Mobile has been targeted mainly at young mobile phone users, and it seems that it managed to become rather popular in a short while. At the same time, it also helped SFR gain some market share in its competition against rival Orange, which also has a similar offering, M6 Mobile, currently reported to have around 1.5 million subscribers.

Thierry Cammas, the head of MTV Mobile France, stated that MTV was planning to make further moves into the mobile phone area, eventually being able to “create a real ecosystem” around handsets. At the same time, it seems that MTV Mobile might receive another boost in the near future, as a new touchscreen handset is expected to soon be launched under the MTV branding, this way attracting an even larger number of customers.

Another thing that should be noted is the fact that MTV Mobile is not limited only to France; it is also present in Italy, as an MVNO that makes use of TIM’s network. For the time being, there are no details about the number of subscribers it has in the country.
