When it premiered in May 2006, MTV’s new reality show “The Hills” became an instant hit. In time, though, rumor began to circulate that perhaps the series was not as “real” as producers claimed it was and that many of the things showed onscreen were actually well scripted and well rehearsed. The show still held on to a large audience, an audience that will probably be disappointed to hear that the sixth season is also the last, as Entertainment Weekly reports.

Series creator Adam DiVello is the one to confirm the sad news, which could very well mark the end of an era in television, since many magazines listed “The Hills” among the best television productions of the past 25 years. The sixth season, which premieres on April 27, will be the perfect opportunity to tie up all loose ends and bring the stories of the protagonists to a close, including that of Heidi Montag, who’s been through some major changes physically these past few months, DiVello says.

“I think we’ve told the story of struggle and of finding yourself in L.A. A lot of these kids have found themselves and have certainly embarked on different careers and different paths. […] We tell the whole story [of Heidi and the physical makeover she recently underwent]. We pick right up where Heidi goes and sees her parents. And our cameras are there that minute the mother opens the door and sees her daughter for the first time,” DiVello says. Executive producer Liz Gateley chimes in, saying, “It’s a really touching but heartbreaking scene to watch.”

“In the final 12 episodes set to begin airing on April 27 at 10 p.m. ET, fans can expect to see Audrina Patridge dating singer Ryan Cabrera and Kristin Cavallari dealing with rumors of drug abuse. ‘When Kristin was in Miami for the Super Bowl, there was definitely some late nights for her and some speculation that she might be partying a little too hard,’ explains Gateley. ‘So we’re definitely going to cover that part of Kristin. We’re pretty much covering everything you’ve read [about in the tabloids].’ Also look for Stephanie Pratt to be dealing with sobriety, coming off her DUI last year,” EW writes.

Addressing rumors that Spencer Pratt, Heidi Montag’s husband, has been kicked off the show, DiVello says that he’s just dealing with some personal stuff and his participation will be limited, but he’ll still be featured in most episodes. Another rumor that the series creator tackles is whether original star Lauren Conrad will be returning for the final season, but he only says that her return is a possibility.
