The first motherboard featuring Extensible Firmware Interface BIOS has just been launched by MSI - Micro-Star International. The new BIOS is intended to replace the legacy BIOS used now by all PCs. The EFI BIOS offers a more flexible interface that supports colorful graphics, multiple languages and mouse support. MSI is the first manufacturer to take the serious jump to EFI with its next generation motherboards, although Intel was the first to announce an intention to move from the old BIOS, about two years ago.

In the press release that announced the new type of BIOS, MSI declares that, after twenty years of experience in manufacturing high quality IT products, it wants to come forth with its head up once again by phasing the Extensible Firmware Interface BIOS which will be of a great use to all MSI users. The product lines of MSI cover a wide range of IT products, such as motherboards, graphic cards, networking products, or consumer electronics, and the company tries to provide the ultimate performance and reliability.

The Extensible Firmware Interface BIOS allows users to use a GUI and mouse and it encourages them to unlock the full potential of the MSI motherboards. The new EFI BIOS is supposed to be more than just a BIOS, as it supports LAN and pre-OS applications such as media player, live update, games, instant messenger and a browser. And we should also notice that Microsoft announced that it will add EFI support to the x64 versions of Windows Vista with Service Pack 1. The Extensible Firmware Interface BIOS will allow much easier accessibility of mainboard's BIOS systems.

Intel developed the original EFI specification, which is now managed by the Unified EFI Forum, officially known as Unified EFI (UEFI). ■ Supports graphical menus and features ■ Supports mouse-controlled interface ■ Supports pre-OS applications, file oriented (ex: System recovery, games, media player, Internet browser, etc.) ■ Supports LAN activating environment ■ Supports multi-language ■ UEFI support for x64 versions of Windows Vista are included in a Service Pack 1

The impact of the EFI BIOS should be a noticeable one, after all this years under the rule of a old stone age BIOS.
